VIDEO: A special Holiday Message from Barack & Joe….and Jim!

Season’s Greetings Hope Mongers!

Now that “Speaker Boehner The Grinch” has given us back our payroll tax cuts, it is a perfect time to reflect on this amazing year for GO-DC & Network For Progress.

I want to thank everyone who helped organize or join us at an event or otherwise participated online as we look to build a community of people inspired by the “Yes We Can” Movement that can spread the word about the cause of “progress” in 2012 & beyond.

In 2011, we hosted a packed State of the Union Watch Party at Local 16, a “Yes We Can” Movement Anniversary & N4P Launch Party appropriately at “Public” Bar, “1st Thursday” Progress Parties that were featured in the Style section of the Washington Post with great guests like Current TV’s David Shuster and former Congressman Tom Perriello, a social media and socialite-centric date auction that raised $5,000 plus speed dating and social/career development workshops that hopefully made a difference in the daily lives of our members.

It is tough to measure such things but this year we notched our third “date auction”-related engagement, proving quite clearly that we can make a difference for each other as a community with or without an election victory….whether it be helping someone improve their resume or find an event to get a job in Washington OR find a person they have some VERY IMPORTANT beliefs in common with to spend the rest of their lives together. (congrats Faith & Jason!)

Next year we hope to build on our 5,000+ member N4P/GO-DC community by offering more varied activities and engaging everyone further with ways that can make a difference for both the national election and our local neighborhoods.

We learned a lot this year how even just a few random. but inspired, citizens can come together with a creative idea and make an impact to change the social and media dynamic that controls the political dialogue in America and inspire moments like this….

VIDEO: President Obama’s speech on economic fairness (12/6/2011)

I look forward to working together with YOU creatively so Progressives, Democrats, Independents and even moderate Republicans in our Movement can make a similar impact in the VA/DC/MD region and beyond to help ensure a “Mandate for Progress” on November 6th so the childish political games are replaced by the adult governing cooperation our country deserves.

Here is a very special Holiday Message & Gift from Barack & Joe to bring some cheer as we “Hope 4 More” (years) in 2012!

A Special “Generation Obama” Holiday Message about our Past & Future!

Dear “Generation Obama” DC’ers,

I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone for being part of this community that has survived for over three years due to the enthusiasm of so many of you for supporting President Obama and connecting with and helping like-minded folks who are interested in delivering HOPE, CHANGE and PROGRESS in our neighborhoods and across our nation and throughout the world.

Let me share with you a little bit about where I think we stand.

RECENT SUCCESSES

Over the last two years we witnessed what is already one of the most prolific first-term Administrations in history as in just December we can take credit for playing a small part in many great achievements:
– making sure that middle class families keep an average of $1,000 of their income or get the unemployment benefits they deserve during these tough economic times
– providing thousands of our service members with the recognized right to love whoever they choose
– eliminating 30% of nuclear weapons between two Cold War adversaries
– ensuring our food supply is safe and kids get proper nutrition at school
– giving our 9/11 first responders the care they earned after being neglected despite their sacrifices in unsafe working conditions
– and even protecting our ears from extra noisy TV advertisements!
(my Mom likes this one the best…make sure to tell your Republican uncle about it at holiday dinner)

Although the Republicans tried to run out the clock on the session these things passed with decent bipartisan support as a post-election truce seemed to win the day at least with some more moderate Senators. I’m not sure if it can continue but unfortunately it will be necessary for more progress to happen in the 112th Congress.

UPCOMING CHALLENGES

That’s because the larger issue is this….despite the infighting over policy items like the public option and cap-and-trade lots of good was done in the last two years YET America didn’t demand that Obama’s allies return to Washington.

Of course the economy’s comeback has been slowed due to the overly-restrained stimulus efforts AND midterm elections usually trend toward voters showing some buyer’s remorse but we’re competing with Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck wannabes here!

We can’t blame Citizens United either as Democratic fundraising technically led Republicans so they were in the game and big money didn’t help Meg Whitman or Linda McMahon in their Senate races.

But nonetheless we lost several Governor and Senate races and over 60 seats in the House….including “DADT Repeal” Sponsor & Gen44 co-chair Representative Patrick Murphy as well as many others like him such as Tom Perriello and Steve Driehaus.

Why is that?

My contention is we didn’t focus on the basics of why people will support a cause. That means developing a coalition-based “Yes We Can” Movement-building strategy that could have maintained our 2008 momentum at little financial cost.

This includes investing in a community that spawned Shepard Fairry’s Barack Obama “Hope” painting, the OFA “rainbow” logo, “Change We Can Believe In” and numerous other slogans, poignant TV ads and even an infomercial starring the candidate, big rallies with inspiring speeches, monthly meetups, “Sing For Obama” low-dollar fundraisers, MyBo discussion groups, “One Million Strong” facebook groups, Retweeted @BarackObama quotes and even YouTube music videos from the likes of Will.i.Am and Obama Girl. Those are the ingredients of an historic movement and were at the core of the Obama For America campaign.

Meanwhile the Republicans did…and the Tea Party and Fox News have teamed up to dominate the public discourse with similar methods.

And so did Jon Stewart….so he was able to assemble over 200,000 people on the National Mall and then shine a light on the neglected 9/11 First Responder Bill that finally passed this week.

The game has changed and these examples show how in a world where the founder of Facebook is Time’s Person of the Year (plus a few years back it was “YOU”) our politics must take the lessons of the 2008 campaign and run with them NOT let others use them to pass us by.

But like President Obama once said….”I can’t do it alone.” He’s only one person and most of the top players are still playing the Old School Politics game or don’t have a full understanding of what Obama’s leadership approach is all about.

HOW WE CAN HELP….and become our own “Obama”

What we really need is a coordinated “customer”-focused communications, outreach and mentoring program built on the use of Social, Media AND Social Media tactics with a concisely-framed messaging and organizing structure to create the relationships and viral buzz required to educate, influence and inspire the Mainsteam Majority of “sane” people who voted for Obama (from Democratic progressives to Independent moderates to Republican libertarians) to be engaged and involved in political and civic life.

These “networking” efforts create a standing army ready to help with numerous campaign needs ranging from fundraising to volunteering to spreading our message to our friends and family online and offline….and of course voting on Election Day.

This isnt just a wild hypothesis though. In the marketing spectrum this more interactive “Word-Of-Mouth” Marketing of peer-to-peer contact and earned media is considered much more effective than neighbor-to-neighbor contact and paid media techniques often focused on by traditional campaigns.

Think about why you vote the way you do….probably because someone in your life or the “news” influenced you most.

Ironically for these “old school” folks politics is already a social game but they haven’t quite adapted to the fact that the public can and is easily part of it now.

You might see examples of this fact used by our allies here and there but the kind of broad effort that we truly need no longer exists in the Democratic Party or any progressive group I know.

Organizing For America was well-positioned to serve this role but has unfortunately not focused on the priorities I am discussing and despite some good advocacy efforts widely consists of mass emails with boilerplate messaging and fundraising purposes coupled with mostly “cold” field organizing of random door knocks and phone calls that are necessary but not ideal for gaining a loyal and active following

We need something more to win and grow our Movement. There are lots of good causes out there that are competing with us and the only way to cut through the clutter and control the narrative and policy-making agenda is to use these methods to build a Movement that gets in America’s face and demands it.

In 2011 I will be more proactive to ask that you join me to make that dream into a reality as we need everyone to pitch in as a leader or volunteer or occasional helper with whatever interests or skills you can offer so we can make it happen.

As part of this effort we will advocate for the revival of communities like Obama Pride (whose logo I’m using for my Facebook pic this week) and Generation Obama (continued by us but now officially known as the DNC’s Generation Forty-Four fundraising program) that were officially discontinued by Organizing For America while creating a new one that makes the grassroots a permanent priority via a Network For Progress.

We will then practice what we preach by working to spread political and civic awareness as well as build an activist team in preparation for 2012 and beyond.

I will share more about this direction soon but wanted to explain where I stand as we start the next chapter because I look forward to your help no matter how great or small.

In the meantime….Happy Holidays to Generation Obama and good luck in the New Year!

Regards,

Jim McBride
GO-DC President

UPDATE: Tax Cut Debate. 12/11-12 RootsCamp, 12/16 GO Party & More Events!

– GENERATION OBAMA UPDATE –
(December 9, 2010)

Hey Generation Obama’ers,

I know many progressives are disappointed with the President’s “Bush Tax Cut” Deal and it would be great if the Democrats in Congress can get a little bit more out of the package but I want to lay out a few key points for us to remember:

#1 At least $700 Billion of the $800-900 Billion package benefits the “Middle Class” including 13 months of extended unemployment benefits: http://swampland.blogs.time.com/2010/12/07/working-out-the-cost-of-obamas-grand-tax-cut-bargain/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+timeblogs%2Fswampland+%28TIME%3A+Swampland%29

#2 Emergency Federal Unemployment Benefits for the long-term unemployed have expired and the tax cuts for “Middle Class” wages under $250K will expire on December 31st so if nothing passes who do you think the media will blame if nothing gets done quick….the President or the people still-ranked as the Minority Party in Congress?

#3 The President’s stimulus tax cuts are also expiring and the deal replaces them with a bigger $120 Billion payroll tax cut that progressively helps lower income earners.

#4 Every American taxpayer would still get a portion of the tax cuts even if a 100% Democrat-version passed because rich people would get lower rates for their first $250K and the COMPROMISE MOSTLY MEANS WE’RE NOT RAISING TAXES ON OVER $250K EARNERS NOT THAT WE’RE GIVING THEM NEW TAX CUTS.

#5 Although not as effective, Obamas advisers estimate that the tax cuts on 250K+ wages still expand the economy between 10-20 cents per dollar (maids and yacht builders benefit at least!)

#6 By tabling the issue for two years and he can make it a clear issue to discuss during the 2012 Presidential Campaign that he will fight for after getting re-elected since only 40% of Americans support Bush tax cuts for the rich: http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2010/dec/02/john-boehner/john-boehner-says-american-people-spoke-pretty-lou/

Meanwhile, the Senate Democrats decided to deal with the tax cut issue after the election and this is what you get when you don’t use your leverage when you have it. The Senate Democrats recently tried to pass a better bill but couldn’t and some even voted against it! So, the President has stepped in to do what the Senate couldn’t do alone.

The President also wants to try to pass the DREAM Act, DADT Repeal, New START Treaty etc. so he needs to pick his battles and can possibly use this deal to get more support for other deals and at the very least have more time to work on them.

The most important thing though is we all realize that even if you think he stinks at negotiating he is fighting to get some great results for Americans before he loses much of his ability to do so.

More details and events below!

Auctionee: Bethany Quinn

Tell us something interesting about yourself!
I’m a wonk/policy nerd. I’ve also lived in a few countries in Latin America – Brazil (Rio de Janeiro), Panama (Concepción, near the Costa Rican border), and Chile (Ssntiago and Viña del Mar)

What is your favorite thing about President Obama?
Through my job, I met some unionized Brazilian bank workers. After hearing about the progressive discontent with the Obama administration, they said that they had gone through a very similar situation with President Lula there. They had assumed that after the major battle they went through to get “their guy” elected, he would just push reforms through for them, but they discovered that they still had to, “Cobrar, cobrar, cobrar” – collect/demand, demand, demand.

That’s how I feel about the Obama administration – looking back, I think we’ve achieved some major goals. Not as much as I would have hoped, but if people like me (and you?) don’t keep pushing, (and pushing back against the inevitable tide of lobbyist and wingnuts- *ahem* right-wing pressure), who will?

How are you being your own “Obama” by making our community better?
I work for a union and I’m in…an interesting philosophical place, debating the merits of fomenting the movement in the streets (railing against lobbyists and special interests) and/or achieving change by lobbying Capitol Hill (no, the irony of my quandary is not lost on me). I’ve also just signed on to work with my best friend to start up an organization doing microfinance in conflict areas (starting with the Congo).

What is the most exotic place that you have ever been?
I’ve been to my fair share of off-the-beaten path desert islands (Ilha Grande in Brazil, San Blas in Panama, etc.). Arpoador, the bluff in Rio de Janeiro overlooking Ipanema and Copacabana beaches. I’ve been to all three of Pablo Neruda’s houses, they were pretty cool. The Southwest (in the US) is an amazing, otherworldly place, which inspires meditation and spiritual reflection.

Special Auctionee: NDN’s Alicia Menendez

Alicia Menendez is a social commentator based in Washington, DC. In 2005, after graduating from Harvard College, she joined Jon Corzine’s successful 2005 gubernatorial race, and served as a a primary surrogate on her father’s successful 2006 bid for the US Senate. Since then, she has worked as Political Outreach Manager for Rock the Vote, and Communications Director for Democracia USA. She currently works as a Senior Advisor at center-left think tank, NDN.
At Harvard, Menendez’s senior honors thesis on women’s social capital drew the attention of US News and World Reports, The New York Times, and The Harvard Crimson, which named Menendez one of the 15 most interesting members of the class of 2005. That same year, Menendez was selected to deliver the undergraduate commencement address.

Menendez is originally from Union City, NJ. She has no idea why this is written in the third person, but agrees that the glamour shot above is hilarious.

NOTE: You can learn more about Alicia and watch her recent segments on Larry King Live, MSNBC and FOX at http://aliciamenendez.com/
